Spyros Themelis
Spyros Themelis is an Associate Professor in Education at the University of East Anglia. His work explores the contribution of social movements in the renewal of higher education and democracy. He recently completed a FUNCAP-British Academy project in Brazil on ‘Grammars of resistance and pedagogies of hope: a dialogue between civic society organisations, higher education and social movements’. Currently, he leads, ROMLIT a £200.000 research project researching Early Years literacies of Gypsy/Roma/Traveller children in the UK. Spyros has published a monograph on Social Change and Education (Palgrave, 2013), an edited book on Critical Reflections on the Language of Neoliberalism in Education (Routledge, 2021) and several papers in international journals. His forthcoming monograph (2025) ‘The Pedagogy of Radical Change: Social Movements, Resistance and Alternative Futures in Higher Education and Society’ draws on his work with education movements in Chile, Brazil, Greece and the UK. Spyros is a Research Fellow of the Research Center for Contemporary Chinese Studies, Wuhan University, China, as well as of the Centre for Contemporary Immigration Studies, University of California, San Diego, (UCSD) USA. He is an editor in the following peer-reviewed, international journals: Journal for Critical Education Policy Studies (JCEPS) Studies, Teaching in Higher Education: Critical Perspectives, Social Inclusion, Revista Educação & Formação.
